Zayed Authority for People of Determination launched an interactive awareness experience at Yas Mall as part of World Autism Month, transforming traditional messaging into an immersive public engagement initiative.

“A Positive Shock”… and Surprise Musical Performances that Reshape Awareness of Autism
In a qualitative step reflecting the evolution of community awareness tools, Zayed Authority for People of Determination launched an innovative experience at Yas Mall as part of World Autism Awareness Month. Through this initiative, the Authority shifted awareness from traditional messaging to a live, immersive experience that directly engages the public, creating what can be described as a “positive shock.”
The mall’s corridors witnessed surprise musical performances by several People of Determination with Autism Spectrum Disorder, including Sarah Qattab (20), Zayed Mohammed Al Zaabi (12), and Ahmed Al Hashemi (15). The performances began naturally among visitors without prior notice, quickly transforming into a focal point of gathering and remarkable interaction.
The musical pieces were not random; they were specially composed to suit each performer’s abilities, reflecting their unique style of expression. The pieces ranged from calm melodies expressing focus and harmony to vibrant compositions reflecting energy and passion—turning each performance into a “personal signature” that tells the performer’s story without words.
After moments of engagement, the experience evolved further as the mall’s screens displayed unexpected awareness messages accompanied by QR codes. These allowed the audience to discover the real stories behind each performer through short introductory videos revealing their identity and talent—creating a seamless transition from surprise to understanding.
The experience was professionally designed to feel natural and unobtrusive, with a filming team using hidden cameras to capture authentic reactions. Influencers were also engaged as regular visitors to present the experience from a realistic perspective, enhancing credibility and deepening the impact of the message.
The initiative aims to reshape the stereotypical image associated with autism, often limited to concepts of isolation or restricted abilities, by offering a direct sensory experience that presents People of Determination as models of creativity and excellence, while promoting inclusion in public spaces.
It also aligns with the objectives of the Year of the Family 2026 by highlighting the role of the family as a key partner in the empowerment journey and a fundamental pillar in showcasing the abilities of individuals within society.
In this context, H.E. Abdullah Abdul Aali Al Humaidan, affirmed that the initiative represents a qualitative shift in awareness approaches. He noted that real impact is not achieved through traditional messages alone, but through live human experiences that enable society to witness abilities up close.
His Excellency added that the Authority continues to develop innovative initiatives in partnership with various entities to enhance quality of life, promote a culture of inclusion, and empower People of Determination to actively participate in society. He also extended his thanks to Aldar Properties and Yas Mall management for their outstanding cooperation in the success of this initiative.
He also expressed his appreciation to the families whose children participated in the musical performances for their efforts and cooperation.
On her part, H.E. Huda Ibrahim Al Khamis, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation and Founder and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, said:
“We are working in partnership with Zayed Authority for People of Determination to enhance the community participation of People of Determination and empower their presence within the creative scene, arts, and music. This stems from our belief in the importance of developing their role, building their artistic capabilities, and prioritizing the promotion of a culture of inclusion, as well as raising awareness of their contributions to the nation and humanity.”
Her Excellency added:
“Our celebration comes as part of the activities of World Autism Month, marking the culmination of a month-long training programme. It includes two community performances at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi and Al Jimi Mall in Al Ain, featuring talented musicians of determination—Ahmed Al Hashemi, Zayed Mohammed Al Zaabi, and Sarah Jalal Al Qutb—performing a musical piece composed by Nadim Tarabey, the second-place winner of the Abu Dhabi International Composition Competition.”
The initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and Aldar Properties, as part of integrated institutional efforts to support impactful community initiatives.
